Five years after it was built, the Santa Cruz Transport Centre was officially opened.
Chairman of the St Elizabeth Parish Council Everton Fisher who cut the ribbon alongside Local Government Minister Noel Arscott at the opening of the centre on November 20, has told to operators and passengers that efforts are now being made to install lights in the park.
"We recognise the problem and we are going to install two street lamps in the transport centre," Fisher, councillor for the Balaclava Division and Mayor of Black River, said Friday. "All efforts will be made to light it up before Christmas," he added.
The St Elizabeth police who say the long-delayed parliamentary gazetting of the transport centre in mid-year has given them legal power to take action against public passenger operators, who refuse to use the park, have welcomed news of the promised lights.
"The lighting as it is now is definitely not sufficient, if we can get it properly lit, it would make a big difference at nights," said Corporal Albert Simpson of the St Elizabeth traffic department.
Simpson said the transport centre has significantly relieved traffic pile-up ahead of Christmas. "The traffic is definitely moving much more freely now and it is easier to keep order," said Simpson.
He complained, however, that some taxi and bus drivers plying the Maggotty and Siloah routes were still showing resistance to using the park.
He is also urging the National Works Agency to repaint a pedestrian crossing on Main Street in the vicinity of the transport centre which he pointed out has faded badly.
